The San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation

sfffcpfThe San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation (SFFCPF) has been serving the community since 2006 and is dedicated to the early detection and prevention of cancer in both active and retired members of the San Francisco Fire Department and future generations of firefighters: the first foundation of its kind in the country.

Scientific studies and cancer screenings, in collaboration with UCSF, UC Berkeley, and others are published, ensuring the results benefit the wider community. The foundation has been invited to testify in US Senate hearings and Sacramento to highlight the need for chemical laws to be updated.

Firefighters have a higher rate of cancer than the overall population. In September, the group starts a bladder cancer screening and a breast cancer study that has been funded by the California Breast Cancer Research Program.

One of the reasons firefighters are good match for these studies is that emergencies are documented as to type of building, furnishings i.e. fire retardants present, who responded to an incident, what chemicals were used, etc.: a history of data over time.

The organization is sustained by a dedicated, skilled, unpaid, volunteer board. The board is made up of both active and retired firefighters and civilians. We collaborate with various organizations such as SFFD, universities, researchers, scientists, cancer funds, fire departments, and government bodies. These collaborations ensure the best practices for cancer screenings, conducting and documenting exposure studies, increasing levels of awareness in firefighters and the community, and proactively developing and presenting legislation to reduce the level of toxic chemicals in the environment.
